چکیده

The elastic interaction of membrane inclusions provides a unique physical realization of multibody forces. We derive an expression for the multibody curvature interaction between membrane proteins, and show that this interaction cannot be approximated by a pairwise additive theory. However, the interaction can be decomposed into a repulsive pairwise part and a nonpairwise part of similar magnitude which is anisotropic and can be attractive. This non-pairwise interaction can create stable spatial patterns which arise from an interplay between thermal fluctuations and competing pairwise repulsive and non-pairwise attractive interactions. We present numerical simulations which show how aggregates can assemble into ordered patterns from a random initial distribution at room temperature. à Address correspondence to: [email protected] MANY-BODY FORCES BETWEEN MEMBRANE INCLUSIONS

Effect of protein shape on multibody interactions between membrane inclusions.

The elastic interaction of membrane inclusions provides one of the simplest physical realizations of multibody forces. Here we show how the cross-sectional shape of the inclusion greatly changes the character of the interaction, and illustrates a pattern formation mechanism. The formalism provides a transparent framework for modeling bilayer-inclusion boundary effects on the multibody interaction.

N-body Study of Anisotropic Membrane Inclusions: Membrane Mediated Interactions and Ordered Aggregation

We study the collective behavior of inclusions inducing local anisotropic curvatures in a flexible fluid membrane. The N-body interaction energy for general anisotropic inclusions is calculated explicitly, including multi-body interactions. Long-range attractive interactions between inclusions are found to be sufficiently strong to induce aggregation. Monte Carlo simulations show a transition f...

Effective interactions between inclusions in an active bath.

We study effective two- and three-body interactions between non-active colloidal inclusions in an active bath of chiral or non-chiral particles, using Brownian dynamics simulations within a standard, two-dimensional model of disk-shaped inclusions and active particles. In a non-chiral active bath, we first corroborate previous findings on effective two-body repulsion mediated between the inclus...

Combined Three Mechanisms Models for Membrane Fouling during Microfiltration

Five new mathematical triple fouling models were developed to explore the flux decline behavior during the microfiltration. The first model was developed by the assumption of the successive effects of standard mechanism, intermediate pore blockage and cake formation by using the standard blocking flux expression in the model calculations. The second and third models also obtained by the success...

Anthocyanin Vacuolar Inclusions Form by a Microautophagy Mechanism.

Anthocyanins are flavonoid pigments synthesized in the cytoplasm and stored inside vacuoles. Many plant species accumulate densely packed, 3- to 10-μm diameter anthocyanin deposits called anthocyanin vacuolar inclusions (AVIs). Despite their conspicuousness and importance in organ coloration, the origin and nature of AVIs have remained controversial for decades. We analyzed AVI formation in cot...
